EARLY RELEASE ACTIVITIES
Next Wednesday, February 15 at 1:45 p.m., we will hold Early Release Bingo, for ages 5 – 15 followed at 3:00 p.m. by a movie about martial arts starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.

If you work in animal, plant, mineral or synthetic fiber, we invite you to share your finished projects at our exhibit. Contact Eunice for details and to register your items. Setup will through the end of this week and the exhibit will run through the end of February.

ESSAY CONTEST
The Stevens County Library is seeking entries for an essay contest on the topic of “The Way We Worked in Southwest Kansas.”
This contest is being held in conjunction with the Kansas Humanities Council and the Smithsonian Institution in promoting the upcoming Smithsonian traveling exhibit titled “The Way We Worked.” Entries may be made in one of two categories, “The Way We Worked in Southwest Kansas – Oil and Gas” and “The Way We Worked in Southwest Kansas – All Other Professions.” Winners will be selected in each category.
Deadline for entries is May 15, 2012. Rules and guidelines of the contest are available at the Stevens County Library or online at http://www.stevenscountylibrary.com/contests/twww-essay-contest/
“The Way We Worked” will be on view October 27 through December9, 2012, at the Stevens County Library, Hugoton. It has been made possible by the Kansas Humanities Council. The exhibition, created by the National Archives, is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and State Humanities Councils nationwide. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress.

WEBSITE UPGRADES
We will be switching the format of our website beginning Friday, January 13. Therefore, BOTH our old AND new websites will not be available between January 13 and Monday, January 16. This includes WINTER READING PROGRAM LOGGING. Paper reading logs are always available at the library.
In the meantime, we have posted a NOTE on our Facebook page that includes a list of websites you may usually access from our site. Copy/paste the URLs and you should be good to go! This list includes our online card catalog, so you can search all you want while our website is down!

The Stevens County Library is preparing for our annual Textile Exhibit to be held in February in the meeting room. If you work in animal, plant, mineral or synthetic fiber, we invite you to share your finished projects at our exhibit. All types of textiles are welcome, old or new, and we will do our best to accommodate any size. Depending upon response, participants will be allowed space for several pieces.
We will set up the on Monday and Tuesday, January 30 and 31. All pieces should be identified and ready to display. We would also like to know if the item is to be displayed on a table or if it is suitable to hang (i.e. framed, with hanger hardware).
We would like the following information for each item you plan to show so we can make display labels ahead of time:
Your name
Title of piece (Pattern or Design if possible, or Untitled)
Year completed
Medium
Size
Any background information or explanation you would like the public to know
Forms for display label information are available at the front desk.
The Textile Exhibit will be open during regular library hours and will run through Friday, Februrary 24. You may pick up your work anytime after that date.

FESTIVAL OF TREES
Drumroll, please!!! The winner of the Organization category of the Festival of Trees is Stevens County 4-H Patchwork and Quilt Club with a total of 69 food items. The organization will receive a digital movie camera. The winner of the Individual/Family category is Scarlette McLain for Juvenile Diabetes with a total of 294 food items! Her prize is a Kindle e-reader. Winners may pick up their prizes at the library. Congratulations to everyone that participated and thank you to those that contributed food items. The contributions for the Festival of Trees totaled 526 items that will be donated to Project Hope.

- Designs must be appropriate for the age-group listed in the category AND must represent the theme of the category. (Participants may be asked by library staff to edit their designs prior to the voting process.)
- Participants must sign their artwork.
- Entries are due by February 15, 2012. Voting will begin March 1.
- Each participant may enter up to 5 designs for each category.
- Library staff will select only ONE design (per category) from each participant to enter in the final contest.
- Local children, tweens, & teens will vote for their favorite design in each category.
- The design with the most votes will be featured on the 2012 Summer Reading T-Shirts!
