This week we are showcasing Las Madres Latinas in This week we are showcasing Las Madres Latinas in the Heartland Who Led Their Family to Success, a 2025 Kansas Notable Book Winner! It is the most popular and recommended of the books! If you are interested in checking it out, reserve it at the front desk or call the library, 620-544-2301.

Synopsis: Las Madres is an incredible story of generational resilience and transformation with family and community at its heart. Dennis Raphael Garcia deftly writes the tale of three generations of women in his family, recounting the difficult challenges each of them faced in their lifetimes as they pursued the same goal—the advancement of the well-being of their families from poverty to success.

Las Madres focuses on Candelaria Garcia, who was born in Mexico; her daughter Rafaela; and Rafaela’s daughter Irene, the author’s mother. Each of these Latina women followed a separate path on their journey to security and freedom from want. Though they traveled with apprehension and uncertainty into unknown places and arenas, they were courageous, patient, and steadfast in their pursuit.

Las Madres dispels any notion that immigrants and their families who come to the United States are given a life of ease. Very few people living on the high plains of Kansas in 1900 had it easy, especially Mexican railroad workers and their families. Their journeys remind readers that there is no one true path to achieve an end. Las Madres will inspire readers, especially Latina women, to continue the pursuit of their dreams.
The State Library of Kansas is pleased to announce The State Library of Kansas is pleased to announce the 2025 Kansas Notable Books selections. This year’s Notable Books contain stories for Kansas readers of many interests to include mystery, fantasy, poetry, memoirs, and enthusiasts of Wichita’s distinct blues tradition.

“This year’s Kansas Notable Books selection offers variety and familiar themes, inviting readers into the lives of a Kansas ranching family, self-described Kansas girl turned international spy, and a tree-top world created in the imaginations of a Kansas illustrator and New York Times author,” said Ray Walling, State Librarian. “Books explore family and friendships, finding success in Kansas, how a Kansan became the first person of color to serve as vice president of the United States, and the faith of Father Emil Kapaun as told by the prisoners-of-war he selflessly served.”

Call to reserve any one of these books at the Stevens County Library, 620-544-2301.
